Mystery Case Files – Dire Grove Game Analysis

December 25, 2010

MCF: Dire Grove may be the latest chapter in Big Fish Games’ Mystery Case Files (MCF) series, with the events within the game happening right after Return to Ravenhearst. Once again, you take on the role of the master detective while you continue to tackle mysterious cases that include hints from the supernatural.

MCF: Dire Grove begins with the detective (that’s you!) driving back through the English countryside after solving the mystery in MCF: Go back to Ravenhearst. As you’re driving, you are caught inside a freak snowstorm that’s so intense that the vision is entirely obscured, and you’re simply forced to prevent inside a secluded village just off the motorway: Dire Grove.

As you approach the village, you discover an abandoned car along the road. Investigating it, you come across scraps of paper along with a video cassette containing disturbing details about a dark legend which had become more active. While you progress further to the village, you start to discover that something is really wrong here. The village seems abandoned, and also you find more video cassettes showing recordings with a number of archaeology graduate students who had come to Dire Grove to investigate an ancient dark Celtic legend. By the looks of it, they found the things they were looking for…

The very first thing you’ll notice when playing MCF: Dire Grove is that the production values for this game have undergone the rooftop, a lot better than its already-impressive predecessors! All the art and music in the game are gorgeous and fit the theme and atmosphere brilliantly. To enforce the atmosphere of a snowstorm, you also have snowflakes and flying leaves moving all over the screen.

What stood out for me was the almost movie-like quality within the cutscenes. The intro scene and all sorts of the video clips showing the archaeology students and their misadventures are live action recordings. The acting is pretty decent and also the recordings have an almost Blair Witch-like quality for them. All this adds an extra dose of realism to the game, drawing you in like never before.

The gameplay of Dire Grove has additionally started out the fundamental hidden object gameplay of the earlier instalments in the MCF series. This game is definitely an adventure and exploration game first, with hidden object gameplay and puzzle elements added too. You do not get mindlessly led in one hidden object scene to a different. Instead, you need to use a bit of exploration and logic to determine list of positive actions to attain your immediate goals and advance the plot. The game isn’t extremely difficult to resolve though; most of the objects of great interest may have a small sparkle to help you along the journey.

The hidden object scenes and the puzzles that appear as minigames are both from the standard that you’d expect from the MCF game. The designs are crisp and clear, as the puzzles are difficult enough to require a moderate quantity of thinking and planning, but not so difficult regarding detract from the story or become a stumbling block.

There’s also puzzles that span across multiple scenes. Many times a crowbar or a bunch of nails in a single scene, and won’t look for a use on their behalf till an hour or so or more later. There’s also obstacles that require manipulating the scenes. For example, there’s an item of great interest on the top shelf within the garage. Now what can one find in the region which i may use to reach it?

As has been said before, the game has superb production values, and it is a full-fledged adventure puzzle game which will draw you in for long periods of time. What else are you able to expect from the developers from the Mystery Case Files series who’ve yet to disappoint?
