Need help for mystery novel. What happens after the murder?

I’m trying to write a murder mystery novel and I have some questions about the whole process.

Who deals with murder investigations? Just the local police depatment?

If no evidence can be found that points to anyone is the case just closed? If so, how long is it kept open?

If they have people with motive or people they suspect may have done it can they be arrested or is real evidence needed?

How can the victim be murdered? Can it be something simple? Like the other day I was watching this show where a person got hit on the head really hard by a fire extinguisher and they died from it. Would something like that do? I don’t want something really elaborate, like a serial killer or someone with time on their hands who plan it out. More like what an everyday person would do if they suddently decided to kill someone.

Thanks for help.

Watch CSI, NCIS, Cold Case Files, American Justice etc.

for the investigations that could be done by the local police crime department or lab, if it is a household crime.
If no evidence is found the case is taken in storage and labeled “unsolved”unless some one else wants to reopen it.
suspects may be aressted for further investigation or not.
On the murder fact i once saw in a show that this guy was protecting his home from buglars and put electric wires on his lawn.so wen a person steps in they get fried.he almost killed some one that could be murder if one actualy dies and the wiring is not certified.

nope the police acts like that. The real investigators are the FBI. The case is never ever closed. They keep a record of it forever if its unsolved. Its called ‘on standby’. yes they can be arrested but they have to be released within a day cause when they tkae it to court, no evidence means BAM!!!! your suspect goes free of all charges. With real evidence, you can impose a fine or demand imprisonment or you know 200 hours of community service like cleaning toilets !!!! Victim murdered??? thats your choice . The more unreal and farfetched , the better for you as it deepens plot

    How To Write A Novel:

A Simple Procedure to Follow by Paul Saevig

I’m reminded of something former heavyweight boxing champion Joe Frazier once said around 1973, as he and a non-boxing friend watched a match, directly after the friend exclaimed about how easy it looked to fight in the ring. “It’s harder than it looks,” Joe said, with commendable understatement.

The same is true of writing a novel. Most of the novels we read in school are so well-crafted and brilliantly successful that they deceivingly look easy to write.

Don’t get hung up on learning how to use the English language correctorately. If you spend any time studying grammar then your artistic spirit will be crushed and your writing will be stale.
