Want to throw a murder mystery party for the first time?

I want to throw a murder mystery party. There will be 6 people in total, between ages 15-17. I have never hosted one or been to one but I looked them up on the internet and they looked really fun. The thing is I was instantly confused. I don’t really understand how they work, and from what I read you need a kit to play, but I don’t want to buy the kit and I don’t think one is available in my stores. So I guess what I’m asking is: Is there a way to play without a kit? Can I make up my own story line and if so, how do I do that? And if possible could someone give me step by step EASY instructions on how to play? Thanks ^_^

Make one of your friends the ‘murderer’. Leave clues that could make anyone the murderer and make the people slowly narrow it down. Give everyone a large area to work in and dont try to keep everyone as a group.
Obviously a reward for the person who solves the case
